‘The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.’

These are the opening lines of the ancient poem that starts the Bible which has come to be called Genesis chapter 1.

But then there was light.

It started with darkness but then God moved it into light.

‘The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family and go to the land that I will show you.”’

Here in Genesis chapter 12, God speaks to Abram (soon to be renamed Abraham).  He commands Abram who was here to now go somewhere else.

In Abram’s day, this was a revolutionary idea!

You don’t leave your family’s land.

You don’t leave your family’s land because that is now your land.  And your land is all you know. It was your entire heritage as well as your inheritance.

You just don’t leave.

But God calls Abram to from here to there.

In the New Testament book Matthew, in the 4th chapter, Jesus meets a man named Peter.  Peter was a fisherman.  Jesus, however, tells peter to put down his fishing nets and follow Him to now go fishing for souls.

Peter was doing that (fishing for fish) but now he will be doing this (fishing for souls).

What becomes very clear when you read the Bible is that God is always moving things FORWARD.

He calls people from that to this.

He moves people from here to there.

He turns things from darkness to light.

Always moving things forward

Forward isn’t pain free.  Forward isn’t always easy. But forward is always the best place to be.

When God moves us from darkness to light or from here to there or from that to this, it may not be easy and it may cost us something.

But it will always be worth it.

Read it all for yourself.  66 books covering 1400+ years by over 40 authors.

Each time God moves people forward, it transforms their lives for the good.

Today you may feel like you are in darkness but God is moving you toward light.

Today you may be here but you feel like God is dealing with your heart to go there.

Today you may be doing this, but God has been already urging you to do that.

Move Forward!

Don’t wait around wondering if it will be worth it because “we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28)
